Breakfast, lunch and dinner for seven days

If approved, you can get up to 21 ready-made meals a week, delivered to your door. Your dietitian sets how many you get based on your assessment.

7breakfasts
7lunches
7dinners

Every meal is balanced: Protein+Grain or starch+Fruits & vegetables

Like the tray above: a main with protein, a side of grains, and fruits or vegetables, portioned by your dietitian’s plan.

A variety of prepared meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner in three-compartment containers

Two kinds of ready-made meals

A medically tailored meal: salmon, brown rice, broccoli, carrots and cauliflower

Medically tailored meals MTM

Built around a diagnosis: carbohydrate-controlled for diabetes, lower sodium for heart conditions, softer textures where chewing or swallowing is hard.

Best for: members whose health condition depends on what they eat, such as diabetes, heart or kidney disease, or trouble chewing or swallowing.

Clinically appropriate meals CAM

Balanced, consistent meals for households that need reliable food but not a condition-specific plan.

Best for: someone home after a recent hospital stay, or families with young children.

Not sure which one? You don’t have to choose. Your dietitian decides after your assessment.

No cooking required

Meals arrive ready to reheat. If a home is missing a refrigerator or microwave, we can look into that too.

Built around you

Your meals follow your diagnosis and the dietitian’s plan, not one menu for everyone.

Prepared properly

Halal and Kosher meals are prepared to that standard from the start, not adjusted on request.

Eligibility

Who may qualify

Every request is reviewed. A short screening and an eligibility assessment show what you qualify for. Many members qualify based on their Medicaid record. If not, a short form signed by your doctor may help, and we provide the paperwork.

  • Active New York Medicaid, through a Medicaid health plan. Any regular plan works, including HARP.
  • A qualifying health need or situation. Your screening and eligibility assessment show this.
  • You live where we deliver: Brooklyn, Queens or Manhattan.

On Medicaid but no health plan yet?

That is called Medicaid fee-for-service (FFS), and for many people it is only a starting point. MealboxRx meals are for members of a Medicaid health plan. Most people with New York Medicaid must join one, and it is free. If you get a letter asking you to choose and you don’t, a plan will be chosen for you, so it is better to choose yourself.

  1. Call to choose a plan. New York Medicaid Choice: 1-800-505-5678. Is your Medicaid case with NY State of Health? Call 1-855-355-5777 or use your online account.
  2. Wait for your plan to start. It usually starts on the 1st of a month, a few weeks after you choose. Until then, use your state card, and keep it after your plan starts too: you need it at the pharmacy.
  3. Call us when it starts. 718-737-2252. We will screen you and check what you can get.

Any regular Medicaid health plan works, including HARP, and we do not choose a plan for you. Have Medicare, other full health insurance, emergency-only Medicaid, or a spenddown? The rules are different, so call us and we will check. Not sure which Medicaid you have? See the Medicaid card guide.

Long-term care plans (MLTC and MAP): members cannot get meals through this program, because their plan can provide meals as a benefit (ask your plan). They may qualify for other help, such as housing support or transportation, after a screening.

This does not replace or reduce SNAP or WIC. If approved, the meals are at no cost to you.

How meals are prepared

Prepared properly, not substituted

Not every household needs a condition-specific plan, and many keep halal or kosher. Where they do, the meals are prepared to that standard from the start, not adjusted on request. Close to half the meals we arrange are halal or kosher, so this is how the kitchens we work with are already set up.

Standard

  • Balanced meals for households that do not need a condition-specific plan
  • Planned with our registered dietitian
  • Available as prepared meals or as a grocery box to cook at home

Halal حلال

  • Meat from certified halal suppliers, zabiha where required
  • No pork or pork derivatives anywhere in the kitchen line
  • No alcohol used in cooking, including in sauces and marinades
  • Separate preparation surfaces and utensils to prevent cross-contact
  • Ingredient lists available if your family wants to check them

Kosher כשר

  • Meals from kitchens under recognised rabbinical supervision
  • Meat and dairy kept fully separate, never on the same plate
  • Sealed containers, so packaging stays intact until you open it
  • Pareve options where a household keeps stricter separation
  • Supervision details available on request, before you enrol

Halal & Kosher certification

Questions

Meal questions, answered

What is MealboxRx?

MealboxRx is free, ready-to-heat meals for New York Medicaid members who qualify, planned by a registered dietitian and delivered to your door in Brooklyn, Queens or Manhattan. There are two kinds: medically tailored meals (MTM) and clinically appropriate meals (CAM). MealboxRx is a program of MBD Care, a New York Social Care Network provider.

What is the difference between MTM and CAM meals?

Medically tailored meals (MTM) are built around a diagnosis: carbohydrate-controlled for diabetes, lower sodium for heart conditions, softer textures where chewing or swallowing is hard. Clinically appropriate meals (CAM) are balanced, consistent meals for households that need reliable food but not a condition-specific plan, such as families with young children or someone home after a recent hospital stay. You don't have to choose: a registered dietitian decides which one fits you after your assessment.

Are the meals really free?

Yes, if you are approved. The meals are covered through your New York Medicaid health plan, so there is no cost to you and nothing to pay back.

Who can get MealboxRx meals?

People with active New York Medicaid through a Medicaid health plan, such as Fidelis, Healthfirst or MetroPlus, who live in Brooklyn, Queens or Manhattan and have a qualifying health need. Any regular Medicaid health plan works, including HARP. A short screening and an eligibility assessment show what you qualify for.

I have Medicaid but no health plan (fee-for-service). Can I get meals?

Not while you are on fee-for-service (FFS), but for many people FFS is only a starting point. Most people with New York Medicaid must join a health plan, and if you don't choose one after the state asks you to, one will be chosen for you. To choose your own plan for free, call New York Medicaid Choice at 1-800-505-5678, or NY State of Health at 1-855-355-5777 if your Medicaid case is with NY State of Health. The plan usually starts on the 1st of a month, a few weeks after you choose. Once it starts, call us at 718-737-2252 and we will screen you and check what you can get. People with Medicare, other full health insurance, emergency-only Medicaid or a spenddown have different rules, so call us and we will check.

I have Medicare too, or a long-term care plan (MLTC or MAP). Do I qualify?

Members of long-term care plans (MLTC and MAP) cannot get meals through this program, because their plan can provide meals as a benefit (ask your plan). They may qualify for other supports, such as housing support or transportation, after a screening. If you have both Medicare and Medicaid, it depends on how your Medicaid is set up: for some people it is fee-for-service, and some are in a plan that also covers Medicaid. Call us and we will check.

What if I am not sure I qualify?

Many members qualify based on their Medicaid record. If you do not, a short attestation signed by your doctor may help you qualify. We provide the paperwork for your doctor to sign.

How many meals do I get, and for how long?

If you are approved, your dietitian plans how many meals you get: up to 21 balanced meals a week, which is breakfast, lunch and dinner for seven days, delivered weekly. Most members are approved for 6 months at a time, and it can sometimes be extended. Pregnant and postpartum members are approved for 12 months.

Do you have halal and kosher meals?

Yes. Halal and Kosher meals are prepared that way from the start, not adjusted on request. Standard meals are also available. Tell us what you need during your screening.

Do I need a microwave or a kitchen?

The meals arrive cooked, so you only need a way to heat them, such as a microwave or oven. If your home is missing a microwave or a refrigerator, the same Medicaid program may help with appliances. Ask us during your screening.

How soon do the meals start?

Once you are approved, a registered dietitian does an assessment with you and prescribes your meals. Your first meals usually arrive within a week of that, sometimes the next day. After that, meals come every week.

Can I get groceries instead of meals?

Yes, if a grocery box suits you better. FoodboxRx, also part of the MBD Care family, delivers a weekly box with over 20 pounds of food to cook at home. Your dietitian helps you choose.

Is it only food?

No. If you qualify, the same Medicaid program may also help with housing support, cooking supplies, appliances such as a refrigerator or microwave, and transportation to appointments. Each has its own criteria, and your screening shows what you can get.

Will it affect my SNAP or WIC?

No. The meals come through Medicaid and do not replace or reduce SNAP, WIC or any other benefit.

How do I sign up?
